Target Information
Defensins are a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and found in epithelial tissues of mucosal surfaces such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share highly similar sequences with a conserved cysteine motif.
Several alpha defensin genes are located on chromosome 8. The DEFA4 gene has an additional 83-base duplication within its coding region. The encoded protein, defensin alpha 4, is expressed in neutrophils and exhibits corticostatic activity, inhibiting corticotropin-stimulated corticosterone production.
