The DMRT1 gene belongs to a cluster with other family members sharing a zinc finger-like DNA-binding motif (DM domain).
This conserved DM domain plays a crucial role in vertebrate sex determination and male development.
The gene shows gonad-specific, sexually dimorphic expression, and defects can lead to abnormal testicular development and XY feminization.
