Beclin 1은 자가포식(autophagy)의 중심적 역할을 하는 단백질로, phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate 생성을 매개하는 PI3K 복합체의 핵심 하위 단위로 작용합니다.
PI3KC3-C1 복합체는 자가포식소체의 개시(initiation)에, PI3KC3-C2 복합체는 자가포식소체의 성숙(maturation) 및 엔도사이토시스에 관여합니다.
