Target Information
The ASS1 gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the penultimate step in the arginine biosynthetic pathway. Approximately 10–14 copies of this gene, including pseudogenes, are dispersed across the human genome. The functional copy located on chromosome 9 is associated with argininosuccinate synthetase activity. Mutations in this gene can cause citrullinemia. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
