Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike Protein comprises S1 and S2 domains and serves as the main surface antigen of the virus. The glycosylated Spike protein can be detected in infected cell culture supernatants using antisera from SARS patients.
The S1 domain contains a receptor-binding domain (RBD) that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
Spike proteins vary among coronaviruses, reflecting diversity in receptor interactions and environmental response mechanisms for virus-cell membrane fusion.
