Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade after binding to the c-Met receptor. It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and acts as a multifunctional cytokine on epithelial cells. HGF stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a central role in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration. It is secreted as a single inactive polypeptide that is cleaved into a 69-kDa alpha chain and a 34-kDa beta chain, forming an active heterodimer through a disulfide bond. The protein belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but lacks protease activity. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
