Target Information
The CYP1A1 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
CYP1A1 localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum, and its expression is induced by certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including compounds found in cigarette smoke.
Although its endogenous substrate is unknown, CYP1A1 can metabolize some PAHs into carcinogenic intermediates. The gene is associated with lung cancer risk.
A related family member, CYP1A2, is located approximately 25 kb away on chromosome 15.
