Target Information

FTH1 encodes the heavy subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Ferritin consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light chains. Variations in subunit composition affect iron uptake and release rates in tissues.

Ferritin stores iron in a soluble, non-toxic form. Defects in ferritin proteins are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases. This gene has multiple pseudogenes, and several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, though their biological validity remains uncertain.
