Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW range 45–58 kDa) of the human T-lymphocyte lineage, expressed on all peripheral blood T cells and some natural killer cells, but not on B lymphocytes. CD2 is one of the earliest T-cell markers, present on more than 95% of thymocytes. Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating its role as or association with the erythrocyte receptor.
The CD2–CD58 interaction stabilizes adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells. Although CD2–CD58 affinity is low in solution, it is enhanced at the cell interface for tight adhesion. T cell activation increases CD2 expression and mobility, facilitating CD2–CD58 contact and strengthening intercellular adhesion. CD2 deficiency can reduce intestinal inflammation and help control infection.
Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penis squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
