Target Information

CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and can exist in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. CD14 interacts with lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) to bind lipopolysaccharides and plays a role in immune response modulation. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) discriminates structural differences between lipopolysaccharides and contributes to neutralization of foreign lipopolysaccharides. Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and influences allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with mycobacterium chelonae infection and Croup.
