Target Information
The tumor suppressor protein p53 is a sequence-specific transcription factor activated by cellular stress. It mediates cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to DNA damage or nucleotide starvation. Phosphorylation at Ser15 is critical for p53 activation and stabilization. p53 regulates genes involved in G1 or G2/M arrest, such as p21waf1, and plays a key role in preventing proliferation of damaged cells, acting as a tumor suppressor. Mutations in the TP53 gene are common in various cancers and can lead to loss of tumor suppressor function. p53 is also associated with aging, oxidative stress, and neurobiological processes such as long-term potentiation (LTP).
