Cytokeratin pan belongs to a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity. In human epithelial tissues, at least 20 different cytokeratin polypeptides are expressed, with molecular weights between 40–68 kDa and isoelectric points ranging from 4.9–7.8.
Human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20, and their expression patterns vary according to epithelial type and differentiation stage. These patterns are valuable for distinguishing different epithelial malignancies.
