Target Information
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD; EC 1.14.99.5) is an iron-containing enzyme that catalyzes a rate-limiting step in the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids.
The principal product of SCD is oleic acid, formed by desaturation of stearic acid.
The stearic acid to oleic acid ratio influences cell growth and differentiation via effects on membrane fluidity and signal transduction.
Four SCD isoforms (Scd1–Scd4) exist in mouse, while humans have two (SCD1 and SCD5).
SCD1 shares ~85% amino acid identity with mouse and rat isoforms; SCD5 is unique to primates.
