Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Two subgroups of the CEA family—the CEA cell adhesion molecules and the pregnancy-specific glycoproteins—are located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecule subgroup are also found within this cluster.

The encoded protein was first identified in bile ducts of the liver as biliary glycoprotein and later found to be a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates adhesion via homophilic and heterophilic interactions with other subgroup proteins. Reported cellular roles include tissue differentiation and structural organization, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and modulation of immune responses. Multiple transcript variants exist, though full-length sequences are not completely defined.
