Target Information
ATRX encodes a protein that contains an ATPase/helicase domain, belonging to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) syndrome, often accompanied by alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations can cause changes in DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. The protein undergoes cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation, regulating nuclear matrix and chromatin association, suggesting roles in gene regulation during interphase and chromosomal segregation in mitosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
