Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane.
During early cellular development, vimentin and desmin are co-expressed, later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets.
Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and ATP/myosin light chain-dependent contractile events, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
