Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It participates in intracellular transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane and is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development.
Vimentin is replaced by tissue-specific IFPs as cells differentiate and may play a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets.
Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
