Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and include three highly homologous subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C.
These receptors play a crucial role in regulating neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
The alpha2B adrenergic receptor subtype has been found to associate with eIF-2B, a guanine nucleotide exchange protein involved in translation regulation.
A polymorphic variant of the alpha2B subtype lacking three glutamic acids from a repeat element shows decreased receptor desensitization and is associated with reduced basal metabolic rate in obese subjects, potentially contributing to obesity pathogenesis.
The alpha2B adrenergic receptor gene contains no introns in either its coding or untranslated sequences.
