ETV4 (E1A enhancer binding protein, E1AF), also known as PEA3, is a member of the Ets gene family encoding sequence-specific DNA binding proteins.
These proteins recognize DNA motifs containing a central 5'-GGAA-3' element.
PEA3 binds specifically to the motif 5'-AGGAAG-3' (PEA-3 motif) but not to 5'-AGGAAC-3', which is recognized by PU.1.
Ets proteins share the same central core sequence but differ in the flanking regions they recognize.
PEA3 is expressed in epithelial and fibroblastic cells, but not in hematopoietic cells, unlike other Ets family members such as Ets-1, Ets-2, and Fli-1, which are primarily expressed in hematopoietic cells.
