Target Information
Calpains are a family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases composed of an invariant small subunit and variable large subunits. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, and both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes, as their activation can be triggered by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
Calpain 9 is predominantly expressed in the stomach and small intestine, suggesting specialized functions in the digestive tract and possible association with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
