AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein)은 태아 시기에 난황낭, 장관, 간에서 생성되는 주요 혈장 단백질입니다. 성인에서 AFP의 발현은 간세포암이나 기형종과 관련이 있으며, 일부에서는 병리적 이상 없이 유전적으로 지속될 수 있습니다. AFP는 혈청 알부민의 태아형 단백질로, 두 유전자는 염색체 4 상에서 나란히 위치합니다. 단량체, 이량체, 삼량체 형태로 존재하며, 구리, 니켈, 지방산, 빌리루빈과 결합할 수 있습니다. 양수 내 AFP 농도는 신경관 결손(이분척추, 무뇌증) 선별 검사에 활용되며, 혈청 AFP 농도 상승은 간세포암(HCC), 기형암, 대장암, 췌장암, 생식세포 종양 등에서 관찰됩니다.
