A suggested positive control is small intestine (smooth muscle) or leiomyosarcoma.
Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: major constituent of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: involved in cell motility regulation
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and is a key component of the cytoskeleton. It interacts with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
It is expressed in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells in breast and salivary glands.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene cause aortic aneurysm familial thoracic type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
