Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The gene encoding the S6 ribosomal protein is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate of protein kinases in the ribosome, with phosphorylation occurring on multiple C-terminal serine residues in response to stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein plays a role in controlling cell growth and proliferation by regulating translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
