Target Information
SOX9 plays a critical role in sex determination and differentiation of Sertoli cells. It is involved in chondrogenesis and regulates the expression of genes associated with cartilage formation by acting as a transcription factor. Translocation of SOX9 can cause campomelic dysplasia. It contributes to testis formation from fetal gonads and supports the neuron-glia switch during spinal cord development. SOX9 also influences prostate epithelium growth and maintenance, and its dysregulation is linked to prostate cancer progression. Additionally, it is implicated in neural crest precursor formation and melanin production regulation. Expression is observed in adult testis, adult heart, and fetal brain.
