Target Information
RIMS1 is a member of the RAS gene superfamily that regulates synaptic vesicle exocytosis. It plays a role in the regulation of voltage-gated calcium channels during neurotransmitter and insulin release. Mutations in the RIMS1 gene are associated with cone-rod dystrophy type 7 and retinitis pigmentosa. RIMS1 may function as a scaffold protein regulating neurotransmitter release at the active zone and is essential for maintaining normal release probability and short-term synaptic plasticity. It also contributes to dendrite formation by melanocytes. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
