Target Information

ERN1 serine/threonine kinase, also known as endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1 (IRE1 alpha), is a human homolog of the yeast Ire1 gene product. It possesses intrinsic kinase and endoribonuclease activity and plays a critical role in ER-based stress signaling.
IRE1 acts as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum, initiating the unfolded protein response by splicing XBP1 mRNA into a potent transcriptional activator.
It is essential for cell viability under stress conditions that cause unfolded protein accumulation in the ER. Null mutants are viable under normal conditions but not under ER stress.
