Target Information
HEPH (Accession B1AJX8) encodes a protein similar to an iron transport protein found in mouse. The mouse homolog is comparable to ceruloplasmin, a serum multi-copper ferroxidase, and is believed to be a membrane-bound protein responsible for transporting dietary iron from intestinal epithelial cells into the circulatory system. Defects in this gene can lead to severe microcytic anemia. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
