Target Information

This gene encodes the large subunit of DNA damage-binding protein, a heterodimer composed of large and small subunits. It functions in nucleotide-excision repair, and defective activity causes repair defects in xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group E (XPE). Mutation analysis is required to determine whether the defect lies in this gene or the gene encoding the small subunit. Best vitelliform macular dystrophy is mapped to the same region on 11q, but no sequence alterations of this gene are found in Best disease patients.
