Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens and cytokines. It is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of two 146 amino acid subunits (~45 kDa).
Human IFN gamma does not cross-react with mouse IFN gamma and exhibits species-specific biological activity.
Functions include:
- Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
- Induction of MHC class I and II
- Macrophage activation
- Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes
Activation occurs through IFN gamma receptor I and II via the JAK-STAT pathway.
Human IFN gamma shares ~40% sequence homology with mouse IFN gamma.
It is upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF and downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN.
Mutations in the IFN gamma gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
