Target Information

Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index.
Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized and retained throughout life, making them highly stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins include alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma form a superfamily.
Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after early development.
Mutations or aging-related changes in gamma-crystallins are associated with cataract formation.
