Target Information
Voltage-dependent Ca²⁺ channels mediate calcium entry into excitable cells in response to membrane depolarization. These channels are involved in processes such as muscle contraction, hormone and neurotransmitter release, and gene expression.
They are multimeric complexes composed of:
- α1 subunit
- intracellular β subunit
- disulfide-linked α2/δ subunit
- transmembrane γ subunit
Ca²⁺ currents are classified as L-, N-, T-, P-, Q-, and R-types based on their biophysical and pharmacologic properties.
T-type Ca²⁺ currents activate and inactivate more rapidly and at more negative membrane potentials than other types, enhancing odor sensitivity by lowering the threshold for spike generation in olfactory receptor cells (ORCs).
