Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) containing additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from the Golli and MBP transcription start sites generates two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products. Golli mRNAs include unique exons spliced in-frame to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli sequences linked to MBP sequences. The second family of transcripts, containing only MBP exons, produces classic myelin basic proteins. This gene structure is conserved among species, suggesting functional and regulatory importance.
