Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (also called Golli-MBP). This gene contains additional upstream exons, and alternative splicing produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins — Golli-MBP hybrid proteins and classic MBPs. The conserved gene structure across species suggests that MBP transcription is an integral part of Golli transcription, important for gene regulation and function.
