FTH1 (Ferritin Heavy Chain)
FTH1 encodes the heavy subunit of ferritin, the primary intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Ferritin consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light chains, and variation in subunit composition influences iron uptake and release rates across tissues. Its main function is to store iron in a soluble and non-toxic form. Defects in ferritin proteins are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases. Multiple pseudogenes and alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified, though their biological roles remain uncertain.
