Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). LF is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a key component of secondary granules in neutrophils.
It plays multiple biological roles:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
Lactoferrin acts as a first-line defense by efficiently binding and removing Fe³⁺, and also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, and receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
