Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is abundant in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions, and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules.
Lactoferrin plays a crucial role in:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
LTF acts as a first-line defense against microbial infection through iron sequestration and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
