This gene encodes an activating transcription factor belonging to the ATF subfamily and bZIP (basic-region leucine zipper) family.
It regulates cellular processes such as growth and survival by controlling downstream gene expression.
Phosphorylation at serine 63 enhances transactivation and transcriptional activity.
Chromosomal translocations with FUS (chr16) or EWSR1 (chr22) generate chimeric proteins found in angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and clear cell sarcoma.
A pseudogene is located on chromosome 6.
