ABCC11 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes.
ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This full transporter belongs to the MRP subfamily involved in multi-drug resistance.
The ABCC11 gene product participates in physiological processes involving bile acids, conjugated steroids, and cyclic nucleotides.
A SNP in this gene determines human earwax type.
ABCC11 and its family member ABCC12 are derived by duplication and localized to chromosome 16q12.1.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
