Target Information
The EGR2 gene encodes the early growth response 2 protein, a transcription factor that binds DNA to regulate gene expression. EGR2 activates genes involved in the formation and maintenance of myelin, which insulates nerve cells and ensures efficient nerve impulse transmission. Mutations in EGR2 can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease types 1D and 4E, as well as Dejerine-Sottas syndrome, which affects myelin development in infancy or early childhood.
