Target Information

Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly during late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that enables association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus.
Ki-67 shows a cell cycle-dependent distribution: perinucleolar expression at G1, nuclear matrix localization at G2, and chromosome association during M phase.
As a proliferation marker, Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells but increases from G1 through mitosis. It is widely used to determine the proliferative fraction in neoplasms, with prognostic value comparable to the tritiated thymidine-labeling index. A low Ki-67 index correlates with histologically low-grade tumors. It is routinely used as a neuronal marker for cell cycling and proliferation.
