Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Protein sequences vary significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPL39 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with two transcript variants and a pseudogene located on chromosome 5q.
