Target Information
SOD1 (superoxide dismutase) binds copper and zinc ions and is one of two isozymes responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body. This soluble cytoplasmic protein acts as a homodimer, converting harmful superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The other isozyme is mitochondrial. Mutations in this gene are associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Rare transcript variants have also been reported.
