Target Information

Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with various micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2.
It serves as a surface marker of microglia, distinguishing them from infiltrating macrophages. Microglial cells, restricted to the brain, are phagocytes involved in debris clearance and neuronal dendrite pruning. They exhibit functional plasticity, balancing neuroprotective and neurotoxic roles depending on their microenvironment.

Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and have been linked to the differentiation of pathogenic A1-type astrocytes via secretion of Cq1, IL-1α, and TNF under LPS stimulation. These processes contribute to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Outside the neural system, Tmem119 may be involved in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
