Target Information
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis.
HBV surface antigens (HBsAg) consist of three carboxyl co-terminal proteins: large (LHBs), middle (MHBs), and small (SHBs, also called major).
LHBs and MHBs share a hydrophobic, repetitive, membrane-spanning S domain, and MHBs contains a 55 amino acid preS2 region.
Globally, HBV affects approximately 350–400 million people. Immunization against HBV is a key component of preventative healthcare and is offered to all children in many countries.
HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family, and persistent infection can lead to chronic viral carriage and hepatocellular carcinoma.
