Target Information

SERT (Serotonin Transporter) is an integral membrane protein that transports serotonin from synaptic spaces into presynaptic neurons. It terminates serotonin action and recycles it in a sodium-dependent manner. This protein is a target of psychomotor stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine and belongs to the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family.

A repeat length polymorphism in its promoter affects serotonin uptake rate and may be associated with sudden infant death syndrome, aggressive behavior in Alzheimer’s disease, and depression susceptibility in emotionally traumatized individuals.
