This 1E8 monoclonal antibody reacts with human alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a 70-kDa secretory protein in the albumin gene family. AFP is synthesized by the yolk sac and fetal liver during embryogenesis, with the highest levels found in fetal serum. After birth, AFP levels decrease dramatically and are nearly undetectable in normal adult serum.
Elevated AFP levels in adults can indicate hepatocellular carcinoma, germ cell teratoblastoma, liver regeneration, viral hepatitis, or cirrhosis. Therefore, AFP detection is widely used as a diagnostic marker for these conditions.

Applications Tested:
Tested by Western blot on reduced HepG2 cell lysate and by IHC on FFPE human liver section using high pH antigen retrieval. Recommended use ≤5 µg/mL, with titration advised for optimal performance.
Target Information
AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence can occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located on chromosome 4.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper ions, nickel ions, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP levels have been observed in hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
