The CRM17 antibody reacts with human interleukin‑1 receptor antagonist (IL‑1RA). IL‑1RA is produced by macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, synovial and dermal fibroblasts. The 17 kDa soluble form (sIL‑1RA) is produced by hepatocytes.

IL‑1RA inhibits the release of both forms of IL‑1, suppresses IL‑2 secretion and receptor expression, and blocks prostaglandin E₂ synthesis in synovial cells as well as thymocyte proliferation.

The IL‑1 receptor antagonist (IL1RA) gene encodes a cytokine receptor belonging to the interleukin‑1 receptor family. It binds IL‑1α, IL‑1β, and IL‑1 receptor type I (IL1R1/IL1RA) and mediates cytokine‑induced immune and inflammatory responses.
This gene forms part of a cytokine receptor cluster on chromosome 2q12 along with IL1R2, IL1RL2, and IL1RL1.
