RPE65는 망막 색소 상피(Retinal Pigment Epithelium, RPE)의 주요 단백질로, 시각 회로에서 로돕신 재생에 필수적입니다. RPE65 유전자의 돌연변이는 Leber Congenital Amaurosis(LCA)를 포함한 열성 유전성 망막 이영양증의 일부 형태와 관련이 있습니다. 기능 손실은 11-cis retinal 합성에 필요한 레티노이드 처리 과정의 차단과 RPE 내 레티닐 에스터 축적을 초래합니다.
