RPE65는 망막색소상피(RPE)의 주요 단백질로, 시각 회로에서 로돕신 재생에 필수적입니다. RPE65 유전자의 돌연변이는 Leber 선천성 흑암증(LCA)을 포함한 상염색체 열성 중증 망막이영양증을 유발할 수 있습니다. 기능 상실은 11-cis retinal 합성에 필요한 레티노이드 처리 과정의 차단과 RPE 내 retinyl ester 축적을 초래합니다.
