Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, being predominantly expressed in all types of muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle). Its expression is regulated in a stage- and tissue-specific manner, induced during terminal differentiation of skeletal muscle cells.
In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin is localized in the Z-disk region and at the intercalated disk. Expression in smooth muscle is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in tumors derived from muscle tissue (e.g., rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas).
During myocardial dysfunction, dramatic changes in desmin distribution have been observed.
